A bit of technology! Lasers and IPL systems all work on the same principle of absorption of light energy into a particular target pigment colour (chromophore) in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy which causes damage to the specific target area. Skin rejuvenation - often referred to as 'photorejuvenation' is a series of Intense Pulsed Light treatments that improves the appearance of rosacea, flushing, broken capillaries, sun damaged skin, age spots and skin texture. Treatment also improves mild acne scars, tightens pores and softens fine lines. Skin becomes smoother with a more even tone. Photorejuvenation is particularly effective in enhancing the areas often exposed such as face, neck, chest and hands.

The Harmony Laser and Intense Pulsed Light system has a unique filtering system which enhances penetration without using excessive energy levels, thus protecting the epidermis, resulting in safer and more effective clinical outcomes for hair removal, acne clearance, skin rejuvenation, thread veins and pigmented lesions.

Harmony® was cleared to market on April 5th 2004. The FDA has classified the Harmony® system as a class II medical device.

How does the treatment work? An intense light is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat causes damage to the vessel, brown patch or uneven pigmentation and the body begins its natural healing process. The brown patch may darken before it flakes off, or the body absorbs it. It is recommended that treatments are ideally spaced at three to four week intervals.

What is a treatment like?

The time your treatment takes varies depending on the size of the area. Each full-face treatment takes about 45 minutes. First, your therapist will cleanse the area to be treated and apply a cool gel. There is minimal discomfort - some clients refer to the sensation as a rubber band snapping against their skin - and during your treatment the skin is soothed by the use of a chilled air blower. After your treatment, the gel is removed, the skin cleansed again and a sunscreen applied. Immediately following your treatment, your skin may appear flushed, brown pigment spots may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible. Occasionally, temporary swelling and or bruising can occur but all these changes fade over a period of hours to a few days.

How many treatments will I need?

This can depend on a number of factors including an individual's skin/hair type. For skin rejuvenation we recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments. For the treatment of acne it is recommended that clients follow a course of 10 treatments having 1 or 2 per week. For all IPL treatments follow up treatments may be desired annually to maintain results.

What improvement will I see?

With skin rejuvenation treatments patients often claim to look naturally younger and healthier. You should expect to see a gradual decrease in redness, broken capillaries, flushing, irregular pigmentation, pore size and fine lines.
